One of the poorest countries in the world. Employment is mainly in subsistence farming; coffee is the main export crop. After independence in 1962, it was torn apart by 26 years of civil war, but is now beginning to stabilise.

Population: 37 million.
Languages: English, Lugandan, Luo, Lusoga, Kiswahili and 35 others.
Main religions: Christian, Muslim.

CBM activities There are normally two visits a year from the UK, usually April and September. The AGM and a local sisters’ gathering are held during the April visit. If funds permit, a Christmas Youth camp is held.
