Part of the Soviet bloc until the “Velvet Revolution” in 1989, the Czech Republic is the wealthiest and most westward-looking of ex-Soviet countries. It separated from Slovakia in 1993. Both countries joined the EU in May 2004. Sometimes now referred to as Czechia.

Main religion: Roman Catholic.
